N.W.A., Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton and SLB Printing

Would you believe SLB Printing has history with the most notorious Gangster Rap Artist Eazy-E and the group N.W.A!  Lets not forget, SLB Printing has been around since 1984 and in 1989 when SLB Printing was located in Hollywood, in the same building as B.A.M. Magazine and Holland Dozier Holland Records, Eazy-E and the entire N.W.A band walked into the tiny little 750 square foot office where I was running a 1-man show.  I had no idea who these kids were but since I was printing so many band promo-photos and club flyers at that time every week, I figured that must be the reason for their visit and I was right.  Eric “Eazy-E” starts talking to me, “Show me what you’re doing’ for $99.00” he says.  So I take out samples of other jobs and show Eric and all the other kids with him.  “Man…I’ve been getting ripped off!” he says, “These are just what we need and you’re doing them from now on.”  No big deal for me, I’ve been doing this type of job for a couple years now since starting to advertise in B.A.M. magazine for flyers and promo photos.  Little did I know this was going to lead to printing ALL the promo photos for most of the groups being represented at Priority Records and Ruthless Records. Not to mention all these “kids” who were standing in front of me were going to become household names back then and turn into movie stars now in 2015 – Straight Outta Compton!  Yes, Dr. Dre, M.C. Ren, Ice Cube and Yella were all there, watching their band leader make a deal with me for their promo photo printing needs.  All very polite and business like.  I had no idea!  What really surprised me was when my neighbor, a baptist, church-going man from Compton, whose office was down the hall, comes over and asks what I’m doing with those kids.  I tell him I’m doing their printing and he warns me to stay away from that group of kids, they’re trouble!  Again, I had no idea.  I wasn’t going to stop doing their printing!  Why should I?  They showed up, acted a lot more professional than some other drunken bands that showed up in my office, knew what they wanted and were thankful for the quality and quick turn around I gave them.

So now, anyone who’s dealt with SLB Printing knows we are like a black hole when it comes to old artwork and wouldn’t you just know it, I still have all the original metal plates and negatives used to print those promo photos over 25 years ago.  Still in press ready condition too.  Maybe i should start a museum for some of these stuff.  My employees, some who weren’t even born then, all are amazed when I take the old plates and samples out of the box.  “It’s just so cool to work at a place with so much history” says one of our bindery staff while staring in amazement at all the original printing plates and sample.

Here are some of the print jobs we produced for them:
